Skiing:  The Canyons

I hadn't been to The Canyon's since it was called Wolf Mountain. I went there yesterday (had a free pass) and was pleasantly surprised. What was once a boring small resort has transformed itself into a worthy destination.

American Skiing Company Purchased The Canyons a couple years ago. They are in the middle of a large expansion plan. ASC is dumping 33 million dollars into making this a great ski resort and it is beginning to show.

The terrain here is some of the best in Park City. When open, 9990 offers some great steeps. The runs off Tombstone can be very good also. Intermediates can find their way down from every lift except 9990. Beginners can get a feeling of being high on the mountain by taking the flight of the canyons gondola up to the high meadows lift.

The food here is not up to par with Deer Valley and still every bit as expensive. The Red Pine Lodge offers 8 dollar hamburgers, pack your own snacks and save your lunch money for when you go to Deer Valley. ASC obviously has worked on making their employees more friendly, there were host's stationed at the top of lifts and in the base areas answering questions and ensuring people had a great time.

The only bad thing about skiing in Park City is the lack of snow. Although they have extensive snowmaking it is not the same as fresh snow. The Canyons is best skiied in January when the base is a little deeper.

As other epinioners have said, getting around this mountain is somewhat confusing. The area to the left of the resort is isolated from the base. Tombstone and 9990 lifts can not be skied to the base area.

All in all The Canyons is a worthwhile place to spend a day skiing.
